iPhone 14: Latest leaks, rumors, and everything we know so far

Apple iPhone 14 Release Date Rumors and Leaks: What Can You Trust?

In the mobile world, one thing is certain: Apple will release new iPhones this year. The iPhone 14 lineup is currently expected to appear in September or October 2022, bringing new capabilities and new design touches.

iPhone rumors are a dirty business. A lot of them originate with totally unverified, and unverifiable, posts on microblogging sites like Weibo. Literally anyone can publish something random on Weibo and get picked up by a bunch of websites as a source. The second tier come from analysts with sources at Apple's suppliers, but they can't confirm whether or not they're just seeing something Apple is experimenting with and decided not to use. A select few journalists sometimes get the real details, but often not until the last minute.

With that said, here are the iPhone 14 rumors we trust so far.

Although supply-chain problems have created issues for several phone releases, Apple has kept its phones largely on time. We still anticipate that Apple will hold an iPhone 14 launch event on a Tuesday or Wednesday in mid-September 2022, with the phones hitting shelves 9-10 days later.

The iPhone 14 May (But Probably Won't) Use USB-C

Apple is working on switching from its existing Lightning port to the more common USB-C, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. But that probably won't happen on the iPhone 14; it would happen for the iPhone 15 in 2023. USB-C has higher charging and data rates than Lightning makes possible, and it also gets Apple out of a bind with the EU, which may soon mandate USB-C as a universal port on many electronics.

The iPhone 14 May Connect to Satellites

A rumor from 2021 reappeared in 2022 as Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that the iPhone 14 may have some form of satellite connectivity. This would likely come as the ability to send emergency messages to satellites when you're out of a coverage area, as a last-ditch safety feature. While two companies, Lynk and AST, are working on broader satellite connectivity for standard smartphones, their systems probably won't be ready to work at the scale Apple demands for its iPhones this year.

iPhone Mini Is Dead; Only Pro Phones Get A16

Analyst Kuo has been dropping high-quality rumors on his Twitter account of late. His recent blockbusters were that the iPhone mini line is dead, and only the two Pro-model iPhones will get the new A16 processor.

The news about the mini is sad, but it isn't a big surprise. Counterpoint Research says that the iPhone 13 mini, like the 12 mini, was the worst-selling iPhone(Opens in a new window) in its cohort.

The A16 news poses a unique challenge for the iPhone line, though, as new features often depend on new silicon—even camera features like Deep Fusion and night mode, which are now more computational than optical.

It Will Come in 6.1- and 6.7-Inch Screen Sizes

Gurman, the premiere Apple leaker right now, says that with the demise of the iPhone mini, there will be four models(Opens in a new window), but only two sizes. Apple will have 6.1- and 6.7-inch lower-cost models, and 6.1- and 6.7-inch "Pro" models.

It Will Have An Always-On Front Display

Once again from Gurman(Opens in a new window), the iPhone 14 Pro will have an always-on, low-power display like the past several generations of Samsung Galaxy phones have had. "The iPhone 14 Pro will be able to show widgets displaying weather, calendars, stocks, activities, and other data while the screen remains at a low brightness and frame rate," he says.

Hole-Punch Design to Adorn iPhone 14 Pro Screen

On the Pro model iPhones, the notorious notch will be replaced by an oval-shaped Face ID cutout and a hole-punch camera, according to MacRumors(Opens in a new window). Together, the two elements will take up about the same space as the notch, but they'll be surrounded by live pixels and will thus be less of a visual interruption in the face of the phone.

Journalist Max Weinbach tweeted another render of the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. There are also several stories going around about supposed detailed schematics and reduced front bezels(Opens in a new window), but the "information" comes from random Twitter and Weibo users, which I honestly have zero trust in.

A '48MP' Camera May Boost iPhone 14 Pro Camera

A Taiwanese research firm(Opens in a new window) says the iPhone 14 Pro will have a "48 megapixel" camera with 8K video recording. I say "48 megapixel" here because it's likely to use quad-pixel binning to produce 12-megapixel images. The 48-megapixel main wide lens may also combine with the optical zoom lens to give greater "fused" zoom than the optical lenses can alone.

According to posts on Weibo(Opens in a new window) examining early prototype cases for the iPhone 14, the Pro version of phone will have a larger camera enclosure to fit the more powerful camera tech. While we don't usually trust posts from Weibo, this seems plausible, as a more powerful camera could be a little larger.

The iPhone 14 Will Have an Autofocus Front Camera

Ming-Chi Kuo says(Opens in a new window), "iPhone 14’s front camera will upgrade to AF (vs. the existing FF), significantly improving the selfie and video performance."

Apple iPhone 14 Pro to Pack 6GB of RAM

This is a very boring rumor, but it's possible according to a report from DigiTimes(Opens in a new window). Slightly more exciting is the reported use of LPDDR5 RAM, which is faster than the LPDDR4X RAM used in iPhone 13 models.

Some Models May Not Have a SIM Card Slot

This is a wild one. MacRumors says that some iPhone models may be eSIM only(Opens in a new window), without a physical SIM card slot. According to the piece, this wouldn't be a move for or against wireless carriers, but a way to save space in the body of the iPhone. Most carriers don't like eSIM, although all three major US carriers support it. Large carriers don't like it because eSIM makes it easier to switch carriers. Small virtual carriers often don't like it because their older back-end and activation systems can't process eSIM subscriptions.

Apple's iPhone 14 Won't Have Under-Display Touch ID

One major new feature a lot of Apple fans have been patiently waiting for doesn't look like it'll make its way to iPhone, as 9To5Mac(Opens in a new window) saw a Ming-Chi Kuo note that said TouchID under iPhone displays is delayed until 2023's devices, which means iPhone 14 owners won't be able to unlock their phones with other fingers.

The iPhone 14 Pro May Be Sold by Subscription

There are a lot of rumors about Apple offering a new "subscription service" for iPhones. That needs to be unpacked a little. Most people in the US buy phones "on subscription" anyway, with payment plans from their carriers, and Apple already has an iPhone Upgrade Program where you pay $39.50/month for an iPhone 13 with the option to trade it in when the next model arrives.

Macworld pegs this(Opens in a new window) as a way to combine Apple hardware with the company's steadily growing list of services: iCloud, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Apple Music, and such. So rather than a hardware subscription, this could be a single unified "Apple everything" subscription—a discounted way to lock you into so many Apple services that you'll never be able to (or want to) escape.

This Year's iPhone Could Cost $100 More

There are two conflicting rumors about the price of the iPhone 14. The first, from "yeux1122" on the Korean blog Naver(Opens in a new window) that has since been picked up by most of the major Apple publications, claims that the iPhone 14 will retain the same $799 starting price as the iPhone 13 (the Mini, which likely won't happen this year, was cheaper). According to the poster, the information comes from a "major U.S. financial institution." While it's hard to verify, it does make sense for Apple to keep the entry price the same to help create a strong launch for its latest iPhone.

Conversely, Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities told The Sun(Opens in a new window) that he believes the next iPhone will see a $100 increase, meaning the base model will retail for $899. "Prices have been increasing across the whole supply chain, and Cupertino needs to pass these costs to the consumer on this release," said Ives to The Sun.

Apple's iPhone 14 Needs Something to Differentiate Itself

There's a big problem with all of the rumors above—they show the iPhone 14 Pro to be a phone with many new features, but there's very little out there about the lower-cost Phone 14 and new iPhone 14 Max. Unless new rumors come out, the new phones may mostly be iPhone 13 models with a new number on them.

AT&T's New 5G and Better Reception?

One change Apple likely won't talk much about: iPhone 14 will almost certainly use Qualcomm's X65 modem, which has several advantages over the X60 in the iPhone 13. It will support AT&T's new 3.45GHz 5G(Opens in a new window), which the iPhone 13 series does not. It also might—might!—have much better low-signal reception than the iPhone 13 series does. That's what I found with the Galaxy S22 over the Galaxy S21, which made the same modem swap.

The iPhone 14 Pro Could Have a Titanium Alloy Chassis

According to an investor report by JPMorgan Chase (via MacRumors(Opens in a new window)), the new iPhone 14 Pro will feature a tough Titanium Alloy Chassis. This would be the first time Apple has used titanium in an iPhone design and it would be a large change in the feel of the Pro model iPhone devices. Titanium is more resistant to scratching and bending than stainless steel, which could make this a big upgrade for iPhone Pro buyers.

Dave LeClair contributed to this story.

Apple iPhone 14 to bring huge front camera update with autofocus

Apple is expected to bring the iPhone 14 in September. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that the new phones will have the biggest front camera upgrade since the iPhone 11.

The selfie shooter will have auto-focus, moving away from the FF solution for the first time in the company's history. It will also arrive with a 6P lens and bright f/1.9 aperture.

Switching to AF will improve the front camera's versatility, as people are relying more and more on the front-facing camera for both serious video calls and silly dances for social media. The main supplier of the lens will be Genius, while the CCM (CMOS camera module) will be manufactured by LG Innotek and Cowell.

The sensor will once again be a product of Sony, Kuo said. There is no word whether it will be any different from the current 12MP modules from the Japanese maker. However, even without changing it, bringing an improved lens and proper auto-focus sounds like a big improvement.

iPhone 14: Latest leaks, rumors, and everything we know so far

The iPhone 14 leaks are pouring in at this point, and we’re expecting Apple’s latest iPhone lineup to be the company’s best ever. We’re talking about a monster 48MP camera for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, a screaming-fast Apple A16 Bionic chip, and always-on displays.

As far as the models, Apple might be discontinuing the mini model in favor of a new larger Plus phone size. And production delays could start to impact the release timeframe for some of these phones. Make sure to also read our guide on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, set to be Apple’s top-of-the-line smartphone.

The iPhone 14 will almost certainly be popular, as all iPhone releases are. In fact, reports from Bloomberg indicate that Apple has instructed suppliers to provide a massive 90 million iPhone units in the initial production run of the iPhone 14.

Here’s everything you need to know about the iPhone 14 so far.

iPhone 14 design

The iPhone received a major redesign for the iPhone 12, and while Apple typically keeps a design around for three years, it may break that trend.

It’s expected that the iPhone 14 will offer a slight redesign, at least in some ways, compared to the iPhone 13.

According to a report from Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, the iPhone 14 will offer an all-new design.

No Notch and New Face ID Hardware Design (Pro Only)

Earlier this year, there was a claim that the new iPhones would replace the notch feature with more interesting potential designs.

Early rumors suggested that the iPhone would get a pill-shaped cutout for the front camera with under-display Face ID sensors. But, new rumors suggest that there might actually be two cutouts.

A mockup from YouTuber “the Hacker 34” shows what this might look like.

And here’s a brand new leak that could be the best look at the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro’s design.

We’ve heard of a number of rumors around the notch of the device.

Ultimately, the cutouts may be larger than expected and have a wider aperture. According to reportedly leaked schematics, the cutouts will be a little larger than many other hole-punch cutouts in smartphones. We’ll have to wait and see if that changes.

Leaker Jon Prosser notes that at least one iPhone 14 model will get a punch-hole camera of some kind for the front-facing camera in place of the notch.

It’s currently unclear if that look will be on just “Pro” or standard models. However, recent reports suggest that the change will be limited to Pro iPhone models.

Under display Face ID?

According to Prosser, the Pro models will have Face ID tech under the display. Mark Gurman recently corroborated that news, suggesting that some iPhone 14 models will have a hole-punch cutout for the front-facing camera.

Leaked design of the iPhone 14

This is corroborated by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who suggests that Apple may finally do away with the notch altogether, at least for the higher-end Pro models.

The back of the phone may end up being a little different too.

According to Prosser’s leak, the Pro models will get a flush camera array, doing away with the large camera bump that we’ve seen on recent iPhone models.

Around the edges, the phone may end up getting iPhone 4-style round volume buttons. And, there will likely still be a Lightning port on the bottom of the device.

iPhone 14 colors

Leaked Colors for the iPhone 14

Other small tweaks may show up too. Apple has been experimenting more with colors, and the new device may have a unique color or two. And the camera layout may change — it changed for the iPhone 13, and it could change again in 2022.

According to an investor note from JP Morgan Chase, Apple will make the Pro models from a titanium alloy, which will make them stronger than previous-generation models.

Apple may also change the lineup of the iPhone. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said that Apple will do away with the “Mini” model and only offer two sizes — 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches.

That may still allow the company to offer four iPhones. So, for example, there could be an iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

It’s important to take all of these rumors with a huge grain of salt. We’re still a year away from the release of the iPhone 14, and the design could still change.

iPhone 14 models

The iPhone 14 may represent a shift in the lineup for the iPhone — the first since Apple released the “mini” model in the iPhone 12 series.

Most rumors indicate that Apple will do away with that very model. That doesn’t mean that it’ll be one model down though.

Instead, rumors suggest that Apple will replace the Mini with a “Max” version of the standard iPhone, which will be as big as the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but with the same features as the standard iPhone 14. This could be called the iPhone 14 Plus.

With that model, the iPhone lineup will include the lowest-end model, the iPhone 14, a larger version, the iPhone 14 Max, the high-end model, the iPhone 14 Pro, and a larger version of that, the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

iPhone 14 specs

The device will likely represent a spec bump over the iPhone 13. While the iPhone 13 offers an Apple-built A15 Bionic chip, the next-en device will get an A16. Or at least, some of the iPhone 14 devices will get it.

According to the most recent rumors, only the Pro models may get the latest-gen chip, with the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max keeping the A15 Bionic chip.

Originally, it was thought that the A16 would be built on a 3nm process, however, reports from Seeking Alpha note that TSMC has confirmed a delay in 3nm chip production.

In other words, the 3nm process may not be available in an iPhone until the iPhone 15. If not, the iPhone 14 may still get a 4nm processor, which should offer a performance boost over the 5nm chip in the iPhone 13.

It’s also possible that the phone will get a little more RAM. Apple doesn’t really publish how much RAM it includes in its iPhones. Extra RAM, however, would allow the phone to remain good at multitasking and better support larger apps and games.

Apple may also give the iPhone a new 5G chip. According to rumors, Apple is poised to ditch Samsung’s 5G chips in favor of the new TSMC 5G chips. This may impact 5G performance, but perhaps more important than that is the fact that it could help improve on battery too.

iPhone 14 battery

The iPhone 14 series might get a better battery life too. According to Twitter leaker Shrimp Apple Pro, all iPhone 14 models will get a bigger battery. All except for the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

More specifically, the lower power consumption claim says that the iPhone 14 may have about 3,279mAh battery life.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max may bring you a 4,323mAh. While the iPhone 14 Max may have a 4,325 mAh battery capacity. Our rumor sources also say that the iPhone 14 Pro model may have 3,200mAh.

Although we have our doubts, let’s see what the new iPhone 14 models bring when they arrive.

All these would be notable improvements, except for the Pro Max version, which would be a slight downgrade. This is because the present iPhone 13 Pro Max has a battery capacity of 4352 mAh.

iPhone 14 display

The iPhone 14 series may get a new feature that users have been looking forward to — an enhanced lock screen. This is a feature that will actually arrive with iOS 16, and will allow users to display widgets and other things on the lock screen.

That’s not quite an always-on display, but Gurman notes that it might support an always-on display on the iPhone 14.

The biggest change in the iPhone’s display in years has shown up in the iPhone 13, with the addition of ProMotion, or a 120Hz refresh rate, to the iPhone 13 Pro models.

While early reports indicated that the tech might come to standard models too, new reports from display analyst Ross Young suggest that ProMotion will only come to the iPhone 14 Pro models.

A report from The Elec notes that both Samsung and LG may supply displays for the iPhone 14 series.

Apple could also start improving on the iPhone’s display resolution. Most phone manufacturers include at least 1,440p displays in their high-end phones, but the iPhone 12 still has a 1,170p display.

The 2022 iPhone may also represent a comeback for Touch ID on the iPhone. Reports indicate that Apple plans to bring in-display fingerprint sensors to the iPhone series.

Early reports had suggested that the tech might come to the iPhone 13. However, that didn’t end up happening. Recent rumors note that it will likely come to the iPhone 14 instead.

iPhone 14 camera

For years, the iPhone has had one of the best, if not arguably the best camera on any mobile phone.

We have had cinematic features in the present and past iPhones, and now, we expect nothing less than a notable improvement from this upcoming model.

The camera on the iPhone 14 will also likely get a few tweaks. For the iPhone 13 series, Apple brought the larger sensor on offer by the iPhone 12 Pro Max to lower-end models. So what could Apple do in 2022?

According to the most recent rumors, Apple will bring a 48-megapixel main camera to the iPhone, which will support 8K video recording.

The report comes from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who also noted that Apple might bring a periscope lens to the iPhone 15 series.

iPhone 12 Pro and 13 Pro

It’s entirely possible that Apple could bring more cameras to the iPhone 14 series. Some smartphone manufacturers, including Samsung, have brought quad camera systems to their high-end phones.

We could see Apple do the same. Perhaps it will bring a third camera to the lower-end devices and a fourth to the Pro model.

According to a note from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the device may have 48-megapixel main cameras, seriously upping the resolution over the 12-megapixel cameras found on current models.

Another recent rumor, from account “Fishing 8” on Weibo, suggests that this 48-megapixel sensor will be up to 21% larger than the previous-generation sensor.

The front-facing camera may get some upgrades too. According to a tweet from Ming-Chi Kuo, all iPhone 14 models will get a new front-facing camera with an f/1.9 aperture ad support for autofocus.

This will make for a shallower depth-of-field and a more focused effect when using FaceTime.

When is the iPhone 14 release date? The iPhone 13 was just announced, so it will likely be around a year before we see the iPhone 14. Apple usually unveils new iPhone models around September, and we don’t expect that to change any time soon.

So, the series could be released in September 2022. And according to the most recent leaks, the iPhone 14 release date is possibly on September 13th. The iPhone 14 Pro Max release date should be the same as all versions.

How much would the standard iPhone 14 cost?

Well, if Apple does do away with the “Mini” device, and keeps the pricing of the standard phone, then we could have an iPhone for every $100 increment from $800 to $1,100.

In other words, the iPhone 14 could cost $800, the iPhone 14 Max $900, the iPhone 14 Pro $1,000, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max $1,100. We’ll have to see if that ends up being the case — these prices are based solely on speculation.

iPhone 14 USB-C

Launching the previous iPhones has always aroused rumors concerning the company, replacing the lightning port with USB-C. Many people are probably still expectant for such features upgrade, but maybe everyone should just take a chill pill.

Popular analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said that there would be a USB-C iPhone model, but not until late 2023. So, if there were to be an iPhone without the lightning port, it’ll probably be the iPhone 15 and not iPhone 14.

In addition, a bunch of Apple leaks with some accurate records have aired their beliefs about Apple only upgrading the lightning port to a higher version on the iPhone 14.

Software

Running iOS 15 for a year is making us eager to install the latest iOS 16 beta. Apple’s iPhone 14 is going to run and be built on the next iOS software generation of iOS 16, which has been previewed. Those who are aware of the preview know of the new add-widget-to-lockscreen feature.

A redesigned home screen will also make your smartphone more organized and have an even better look.

If you haven’t been up on the Apple rumors, iOS 16 is going to allow you to edit sent messages, alter Maps and Wallet, and more.

Soon, you can even download a public beta version of iOS 16 if you would like an early experience of the iPhone 14 software.

For clarity’s sake, here are some huge features of Apple’s smartphone software being released around the iPhone 14 launch in September.

Edit, Undo Send, and Mark as Unread iMessages

Lockscreen widget customization

Additional Focus Mode filters

iMessage Share play with family and friends

iCloud shared photo library

Improved and additional Siri commands

Map and Wallet editing and a lot of other Security and Accessibility tools.
